The Devil's Den: a motorcycle road route

The Authority's Devil's Den page links a map and dual-sport brochure for motorcycle trips through southern West Virginia. Its August 2025 brochure describes winding roads through Hatfield-McCoy feud country, including Horsepen Mountain's switchbacks.

The brochure requires helmets, proof of insurance, vehicle registration and a valid driver's license for street or dual-sport bikes on these public roads. If your route enters Hatfield-McCoy off-road trails, each rider and passenger needs a trail permit and must follow the trail rules. Use the Authority's linked map to plan your route.

"Outlaw trails"

You'll hear riders talk about outlaw trails: undeveloped routes, often on private land, outside any managed system. The Authority tells riders to stay on its marked trails and warns that rescue crews may not find you in an unknown area. Ride the permitted systems.
