About WV Riders

WV Riders is an independent guide to riding the Hatfield-McCoy Trails and the rest of West Virginia, written from Williamson. We bring trail information, town guides and practical trip planning together so riders can prepare before leaving home and find the official source when a detail matters.

Publisher and ownership

Shield Investments publishes WV Riders and owns the two Williamson rental houses featured in this guide: Buffalo Mountain Retreat at 831 Mulberry St and Linkous House at 1 W 5th Ave, both in Williamson, WV 25661. Contact the publisher at stay@shieldinvestments.com.

These are our houses, and we benefit when readers book them. We label them as ours wherever we recommend them. Our interest in Williamson is therefore both local and commercial. Readers comparing other accommodation can use the Authority's lodging directory and contact properties directly about access, parking, availability and booking terms.

How we check facts

We check trail information against the Hatfield-McCoy Regional Recreation Authority's published material at trailsheaven.com: permit information, trail rules, maps, individual system pages and its August 2025 brochure. WV Tourism supplies official destination information and descriptions of attractions and events. Road-use explanations link to the West Virginia Legislature's Code, including the separate provisions for ATVs and street-legal special purpose vehicles.

For events, we look for an organizer's own announcement or an official tourism listing. We distinguish a past edition or typical month from a confirmed future date. House capacities, addresses, amenities and booking terms are checked against the houses' own websites. Suggested booking windows, group arrangements and itinerary choices are editorial advice, rather than official requirements or guarantees.

We fetch and read the source behind a factual claim, check its date and scope, and list supporting links on the page. A trailhead's staffing hours, for example, are different from trail riding hours. Where official sources disagree on a number, our rule is to leave it out rather than guess. Source-check dates describe a review, not live monitoring; consult current maps, posted signs and official notices again before riding.
